Chapter Six

Jefferson

Jefferson nervously shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He fingered the fabric of the hat in his right hand. Should he hold it with his left instead? Should he put it back on his head? Was that a stain on his sleeve? He rubbed it to see if it would come out.

“When will she be here?” Chip asked. “We’ve been waiting for hours.”

They were at the small train station. Only a few other people milled about, mostly ones who were waiting to board judging by the assorted luggage they carried.

A breeze floated through the air, rustling the leaves of the trees in the distance. It was a beautiful spring day. Flowers were in full bloom, the sky was blue as crystal, and gulls cried overhead. Jefferson tried to slow his breathing. He hadn’t been this nervous since he was a teenager. He’d never been confident around girls. His friend Lyle on the other hand could capture their attention effortlessly, flirting and talking like he hadn’t a care in the world. Meanwhile, he was the guy standing in the background racking his brain to come up with something clever and witty to say. He put his hat back on. Guess some things never change.

“I’m hungry,” whined Albie.

“I want to meet Miss Patience.” said Flossie. Meg stood a few paces off, twirling a lock of her long brown hair around her finger.

Jefferson pulled out his pocket watch. Half past four.

“Any minute, kids,” he said. He shielded his eyes against the afternoon sun.

A low rumble sounded in the distance. The boys jumped up from their game of jacks.

“Here she comes,” said Jefferson softly. For better or worse. His throat felt dry. Why hadn’t he thought to bring water? Surely Patience would also be thirsty – hungry too. They could stop by the Cookery for supper on the way home. Or maybe she would want to rest first? He hadn’t even met her and yet he was already failing to please the woman, for goodness’ sake.

“I’m so excited!” Flossie jumped up and down as the train whistled to a stop.

The conductor opened the doors and passengers started to disembark, descending the steps slowly with stiff limbs. Several yawned and gazed around with sleepy eyes.

Jefferson hoped he would recognize her – she’d described herself in a letter and said that he would know it was her by her red hair.

He frowned as he studied woman after woman coming off the train. This was harder than he thought. Where did brown end and red begin? Ladies with tresses in varying shades of reddish-brown pranced past without giving him or the children a second glance - unless they noticed him staring at them, which just made them hurry along faster in the opposite direction.

“Jefferson!” a feminine voice rang out. A throng of people were now clustered about, however, and he couldn’t see the speaker. Just as he was wondering whether he could have been mistaken about hearing his name, he caught a glimpse of a mass of fiery orange-red curls bobbing up and down from within the crowd.
